Special Teams Reason For Concern

By: Michael Spencer
Updated: September 20, 2012

Special teams have been anything but special for Dalls thru two games, and it showed in Seattle.

It may be clich to say that special teams is one-third of a football game, but the Dallas Cowboys found out just how important that one-third could be Sunday.

Felix Jones fumbled the opening snap which led to a 3-0 Seattle lead in the first quarter.  Before the quarter ended special teams led to another score for Seattle as a blocked punt was recovered by Jeron Johnson for a touchdown.  Two plays.  Ten points.  One-third of the game.

According to Cowboys insider Mickey Spagnola Dallas used rookie Morris Claibourne in practice to return kicks the week leading up to the Seattle debacle.  If Felix Jones continues to play his way out of the line-up it is possible Claibourne could see time as a returner sooner rather than later.

Special teams may only be one-third of the game, but if that one-third leads to ten points for the opposing team the Cowboys need to be better than average, perhaps, special on Sunday.
