JOPLIN, MO.-- Three Republican candidates running for U.S. Senate battle it out in a local debate tonight.

Congressman Todd Akin, former Missouri Treasurer Sarah Steelman, and St. Louis businessman John Brunner faced off at Missouri Southern.

All three are trying to unseat current U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill.

A selected panel fired off questions about everything from higher education cuts to lowering gas prices.

Residents who came to the debate also got their chance to ask questions.

Organizers of the event say seeing so many people attend the debate shows how much the community cares about the future of our country.

College Republican Treasurer for Missouri Southern Johnathan Saunders says,

"It tells me from the turnout...that people are interested, and that they still want to remain active and that's great.  That's what we need in this area is more activity; people knowing the issues and have a desire to want to know more."
