Elections across Texoma are set for this Saturday and the Texas Primary is at the end of the month. But, for Throckmorton, this year's primary will see a big change. And that's why Monday night, state, county and local officials, and the community, gathered in Throckmorton to celebrate a political party switch. And according to those there Monday night this switch is unprecedented.
During 2010's primary, Throckmorton only had a Democratic Primary, but this year all locally elected officials have switched camps. Many in the area had already followed a more conservative view and felt the Republican party best fit their viewpoints.
"I think it's a sign throughout Texas and hopefully throughout America how people recognize through big spending and big government policy are a thing of the past," said Todd Staples,Texas Commissioner of Agriculture.
"In a lot of big cities it's shifting the other way. Most are going from Republican to Democrat. So being in West Texas and being a conservative and a Republican. I think it's great when people step up and proclaim what they are and aren't doing in regards to party affiliation," said Representative Susan King, District 71.
Those in attendance Monday night say they are glad their representatives will soon reflect their conservative views.
