Congressman Todd Akin Makes a Campaign Stop in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A Missouri congressman with his eye on the Senate made a stop in Springfield Monday night.

Todd Akin started his final week of campaigning with supporters at Lake Springfield tonight. Akin is currently the congressman for Missouri's Second District.

Among other things he supports the Fair Tax concept and says he's co-sponsored 26 bills in this Congress to help spur job growth.

Akin says his campaign has chosen to take a positive approach to advertising and says he's stayed away from negative commercials against his opponents. "I think it's destructive to our country. Destructive to the political system. I don't think it's wrong if somebody is pro abortion and somebody is pro life to point out a difference. But, that's different than attacking their character particularly on points that you know in your heart are wrong."

Akin is running against businessman John Brunner and former state treasurer Sarah Steelman in next's Tuesday's primary.

The winner will take on Senator Claire McCaskill in November.
