Akin Begins Bus Tour on Last Day to Withdraw from Race

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Today is the deadline for Republican U.S. Senate candidate to withdraw from the race.  But political observers don't expect that to happen because Akin starts a statewide bus campaign tour today in St. Louis.  The tour brings him to Springfield and Lebanon Wednesday.

Akin has been under tremendous pressure to withdraw from many in his own party, after making controversial remarks about "legitimate rape" and abortion during an interview with St. Louis television station KTVI August 19.  (watch the full report here

He has lost millions in financial contributions from the GOP and at least one major PAC.

But Akin has refused, and instead continued to campaign and said he is in the race against incumbant Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) to the end.  Monday, Akin picked up the endorsement of former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Now, his "Missouri Common Sense Bus Tour" is scheduled to make a stop in Springfield and Lebanon Wednesday, and in Liberty and Platte City Friday.
