Why No Early Voting in New York?

When it comes to early voting, it is really up to each state. But some say having the early voting option in New York could help voter turnout.

A majority of the country offers early voting at the polls while 14 states still do not, and New York is one of them.

"All the New York State election laws determine how we vote here in the state and in Monroe County," election commissioner Peter Quinn said.

Commissioner Quinn says the New York State Leigislature decides if the state will allow it. Some voters do not feel early voting is necessary.

"It's our duty to vote, you can vote by absentee ballot. There is plenty of time to vote, we don't need it," Gary Levine said.

Others feel there is an advantage to early voting, especially for those who can't vote on election day.

"For them it would be a good idea, yes," Tom Zambito said.

Commissioner Quinn says he can see the pros and cons to early voting.

"There are many different studies out there. Some say it improves, some say it deteres from having people vote all on one day," Quinn said.

As for the future, the commissioner says early voting has not been ruled out. But for now voters will have to rely on absentee ballots or voting on election day.
